A Message from Gail Chang Bohr
This fall Ramsey County voters have a wonderful opportunity to elect a new judge to serve on the court. I am delighted to be running for this position, and I would be honored to have your support. My strong showing in the September 9 primary earned me a spot on the November 4 general election ballot. I am so grateful for my wonderful supporters and am eager to reach out to even more Ramsey County voters.
Judicial elections are different from most elections because voters elect judges based not on issues or parties, but on temperament and legal expertise. My potential to serve on the court with distinction stems not only from my extensive knowledge of the law and my ability to interpret and apply the law fairly, but also from my professional experience as a practicing attorney and a national leader in the field of children’s rights and representation. Moreover, my nineteen years as a social worker sharpened my ability to listen actively and communicate effectively with individuals and diverse communities. I enthusiastically support the Ramsey County Bar Association’s efforts to keep judicial elections fair and nonpartisan, and I have signed the RCBA Affirmation. My legal experience is quite varied. I've worked in a big law firm, clerked at the Minnesota Supreme Court, and served as a conciliation court judge. My most recent and extensive experience has been at Children's Law Center of Minnesota, where I've been the Executive Director for thirteen years. Because I am a very hands-on executive director, I spend the majority of my time in the courtroom representing children and working with attorneys on their cases. I have also managed hundreds of cases and overseen the work of 270 volunteer attorneys who donate their time by working on behalf of children.
So how does this make me a good candidate for judge? I know the law and have deep experience in applying the law to a wide variety of cases. Good judges listen carefully, maintain an orderly environment, and ensure that all parties' voices are heard. Besides having demonstrated all of these habits and qualities, I also have an extremely strong work ethic, as anyone who has worked with me can tell you.
During my years in the courtroom I have been involved in the nitty-gritty aspects--and sometimes highly charged dramas--of people's lives. I've also seen how court cases can, at times, bring about positive changes in these same lives. As a judge, I will play a more central role in this process that is so fundamental to a fair and well-functioning society.
